The ICAA recognizes practitioners who promote excellence in the classical & vernacular traditions.
THE JULIA MORGAN AWARDS
The JULIA MORGAN AWARD was first launched in 2014 by the Northern California Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. Since then, the biennial JMA has extended its scope to achieve a broader, more inclusive regional partnership with both the ICAANorthwest Chapter and the ICAA Southern California Chapter. Eligibility encompasses any work, regardless of location, completed within the past 10 years by members in good standing of the ICAA Northern California, ICAA Southern California and ICAA Northwest Chapter’s. Conversely, National ICAA members from any chapter in good standing are eligible to submit projects, as long as those projects are located in California, Oregon or Washington.
The Julia Morgan Award was established to recognize and celebrate architects and designers, artisans and builders, students and patrons, for their excellence in the contemporary practice and support of traditional and classical design. Named for nationally renowned Bay Area architect and classicist, Julia Morgan, it is the goal of the Chapter that through continued exposure and recognition, these awards will laud practitioners for their work and educate both laymen and professionals about the enduring excellence, appeal and importance of the classical traditions in architecture, design, urbanism, the allied arts, and those who contribute to its advancement.
JULIA MORGAN was the first woman to study at the world’s most prestigious architectural school, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, in Paris. Thereafter, she built a remarkably diverse practice in San Francisco, designing at least 700 buildings that are prized by owners and revered by architectural historians. Julia Morgan was also the first woman to be (posthumously) awarded the prestigious AIA Gold Medal. She was notably an influential member of the Arts & Crafts movement, and her classical design aesthetics offer nonpareil precedent forwarding an important understanding of diverse regional expression in the classical language.
